The project aimed to reduce water losses and improve energy and service efficiency, service reliability and water services in the Zarqa Governorate especially in areas of concentrations of Iraqi refugees in order to contribute to efficient and sustainable management of the available water resources.
The project consisted of three components with the following specific objectives:
- Safe and efficient water supply networks and house connections secured in small villages located in the west and North West conurbation, which covers Abu Zeegan, Dogara, and Al-Ruhayel of the Bani Hashem villages, as well as Sarout village in the Beerain municipality - Component (A)
- Groundwater resources at the Awajan wellfield site secured against contamination and surface storage capacity increased to appropriate standards, including construction of a reservoir and pumping station for the Awajan wells - Component (B)
- Safe and efficient water supply networks secured in the densely populated (Gawairyeh) area including reconstructing and rehabilitation of house connections and water meters -Component (C).
Detailed design, preparation of tender documents and construction supervision were completed for Components A & B. Three water supply wells at Ajwan providing 226 m
3/hr and 5 water supply springs at Sarout village producing 11 m
3/hr were refurbished and bought back into service. Three new reservoirs with a total capacity of 1,700 m
3 complete with chlorination plants were constructed, 8.8 km of transmission mains and 30.6 km of water distribution network were installed providing 6,060 new water connections. The as-constructed systems included 3 pumping stations with a total capacity of 433 m
3/hr.
The detailed design and preparation of tender documents for 35km of new water distribution networks to serve a population of 36,972 within the congested inner city area of Gweireyeh (Component - C), was completed.
