Enhancing WWTPs’ Energy Efficiency in Jordan

Project Description: The aim of this project is to improve the energy efficiency of WWTPs in Jordan by extending the treatment processes of selected WWTPs to an anaerobic sludge stabilization with biogas production and electricity generation through the CHP plant. The project includes the assessment and investigation of 10 WWTPs in order to rank them according to their biogas potential. The ranking was done according to a multi-criteria matrix, which included technical, operational, Financial and Environmental aspects. The treatment plants are operated by WAJ or by one of its operating companies Water Company of Jordan (MIYAHUNA), Yarmouk Water Company (YWC) and Aqaba Water Company (AWC). The list included the following WWTPs:

  1. South Amman- design daily flow of 52,000 m3/d
  2. Naour WWTP- design daily flow of 17,000 m3/d
  3. Madaba WWTP - design daily flow 7,600 m3/d
  4. Kufranja WWTP - design daily flow 9,000 m3/d
  5. Mafraq WWTP - design daily flow 6,500 m3/d
  6. West Jerash WWTP - design daily flow 10,000 m3/d
  7. East Jerash WWTP
  8. Karak WWTP - design daily flow 7,400 m3/d
  9. Tafilah WWTP - design daily flow 7,500 m3/d
  10. Muta and Mazar WWTP - design daily flow 7,000 m3/d
The assessment and investigation for the above plants included site visits, data collection, design calculations for the required extension and modifications in addition to CAPEX / OPEX calculation for each treatment plant. The top-ranked WWTPs are South Amman, Naour and West Jerash. Feasibility study and a preliminary design will be carried out for the top-ranked WWTPs in addition to a detailed environmental impact assessment study.
